Course summary

Occupational therapists help people undertake the 'occupations' they want or need to do. An occupation is any type of meaningful activity we do in our everyday lives. This includes going to work, leisure activities, and looking after ourselves. A condition, illness, injury, ability, or state of mind can affect how we take part in activities. Occupational therapists help by modifying these activities. They can teach new skills or strategies, adapt the environment, or use a combination of these.

Our Patient, Carer and Public Involvement (PCPI) participants are integral to the course. Our PCPIs can share their lived experiences of health and social care services with you. They'll contribute to your learning through assessment and feedback in a safe environment. This will develop your confidence and competence before you begin your placement.

Your teaching will take place in multi-media classrooms with state-of-the-art resources for learning. These include:

  • A simulation flat
  • Creative activities room
  • Telecare facilities
  • Our therapeutic garden.

You'll collaborate with students from other health-related degrees through interprofessional learning sessions. This includes physiotherapists, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics, doctors, sports scientists, social workers, and psychologists.

This is an accelerated course, meaning you'll gain your degree in two years. When you graduate, you'll be eligible to register as a graduate occupational therapist. This is through the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You can also apply for professional membership with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT).

Please note, completing an approved course doesn't guarantee registration with the HCPC. It shows you meet the minimum professional standards and are eligible to apply. The HCPC will request more information to verify eligibility. View their website for details.

The staff at the University were so welcoming. I could feel a sense of support and comfort as soon as I stepped through the door. This made me feel at ease as I was so nervous, as you can expect.

What you'll study

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Undergraduate module credits should total 120 credits per academic year. If optional modules are available, choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

You'll learn from a skilled team of lecturers, visiting practitioners, and PCPIs. Teaching methods include online lectures, seminars, and workshops. There may also be off-campus sessions in public areas such as swimming pools or the beach.

The course combines group work, problem-based learning sessions, and online resources. Your personal academic tutor (PAT) will support you through one-to-one or group tutorials.

Assessment is through written assignments, presentations, demonstrations, and observed, structured, practical assessments (OSPA). During your practice placement, a Practice Placement Educator will assess you.

Placements form a significant part of the course. You'll complete at least 1,000 hours. During placement, you'll have supervision from your Practice Placement Educator and academic staff. We may expect you to work an altered shift pattern and work during weekends. Placements can take place anywhere in the north-east. Please note, some might occur outside the normal university calendar.

The course runs over the same number of academic weeks as a three-year degree, with less holidays. This means you can complete it in a shorter time. Near the end of the course, you'll study some modules during your placement. This will help you transition from academic to work life. It'll also show how staff in practice can continue their professional development.
