Course summary
Occupational therapists help people undertake the 'occupations' they want or need to do. An occupation is any type of meaningful activity we do in our everyday lives. This includes going to work, leisure activities, and looking after ourselves. A condition, illness, injury, ability, or state of mind can affect how we take part in activities. Occupational therapists help by modifying these activities. They can teach new skills or strategies, adapt the environment, or use a combination of these.
Our Patient, Carer and Public Involvement (PCPI) participants are integral to the course. Our PCPIs can share their lived experiences of health and social care services with you. They'll contribute to your learning through assessment and feedback in a safe environment. This will develop your confidence and competence before you begin your placement.
Your teaching will take place in multi-media classrooms with state-of-the-art resources for learning. These include:
- A simulation flat
- Creative activities room
- Telecare facilities
- Our therapeutic garden.
You'll collaborate with students from other health-related degrees through interprofessional learning sessions. This includes physiotherapists, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics, doctors, sports scientists, social workers, and psychologists.
This is an accelerated course, meaning you'll gain your degree in two years. When you graduate, you'll be eligible to register as a graduate occupational therapist. This is through the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You can also apply for professional membership with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT).
Please note, completing an approved course doesn't guarantee registration with the HCPC. It shows you meet the minimum professional standards and are eligible to apply. The HCPC will request more information to verify eligibility. View their website for details.
