The University has recently invested over £1 million in state-of-the-art engineering facilities. Choose Sunderland and you’ll benefit from upgraded mechanical engineering, materials engineering, automotive engineering and electronic and electrical engineering laboratories. These facilities allow the University to further develop our strong industry links and enable you to reach your full potential in becoming a technically-skilled, problem-solving engineer, capable of making both social and industrial impact.

As well as dedicated engineering laboratories, you will also be able to take advantage of our state-of-the-art metrology suite, specialist engineering software including CAD, and library, equipped with dedicated engineering resources. You will be surrounding yourself in a stimulating department that produces world-leading research.

Europe’s most productive car plant, run by Nissan Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, is based in Sunderland, meaning the city is leading the way in the automotive and manufacturing sectors.

Gain real-world experience

To further enhance employability, we encourage on-campus undergraduate students to apply for a 48-week placement where available before your final year. Placements are usually paid, with past students having earned an average salary of £14,000-£18,000 a year depending on location. These are an excellent opportunity to put your learning into practice and understand the context for your new knowledge.

The contacts made during placements can also be valuable for future job offers. Recent graduates and placement students have been employed in companies including; Nissan, Hitachi, GlaxoSmithKline, Jaguar Land Rover Automotive, Scottish Power and Network Rail.
