Course summary

LLB (Hons) provides you with the essential knowledge and skills for a career in the legal sector. The course covers the legal knowledge you need to prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). You can also practice SQE-style questions as part of your studies.

The course also covers the foundations of legal knowledge you need to become a barrister. It builds the skills you need for further study, such as a master’s degree or a doctorate.

You'll learn from experienced legal practitioners and research-active staff. You'll also receive a high level of support and engaging teaching to help you achieve your goals.

We offer a range of extracurricular activities to improve your CV, including the client interviewing competition, student negotiation competition, and mooting competition. You'll also have the opportunity to publish your work in the Sunderland Student Law Journal (a peer-reviewed academic journal). Our annual student trip to London to visit Parliament, the Royal Courts of Justice, and the Supreme Court will bring your study of public law to life.

Our Student Law Clinic will give you a taste of real life in legal practice. Events are embedded in our careers and employability programme, where you can network with local legal practitioners.

Integrated Foundation Year

This course is available with an Integrated Foundation Year, an extra year of your degree. This route offers a supportive way of transitioning into university study. It may be suitable for you if you:

  • Have valuable work or life experience but no formal qualifications
  • Are returning to education after a break
  • Want to change direction or explore a new career path
  • Have just missed the entry requirements for the three-year course.

We’re enhancing our Integrated Foundation Year to give you an even stronger start to your degree. The updated modules will align more with your chosen subject area. This will help you build the knowledge, confidence, and skills you need for your studies. We'll share full details soon and can't wait to tell you more.

What you'll study

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Undergraduate module credits should total 120 credits per academic year. If optional modules are available, choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

You’ll be taught by passionate academics who produce ‘internationally excellent’ research. A typical week will include lectures, seminars, group work, and e-learning. We encourage you to develop study skills and carry out independent legal research. You'll also have opportunities to present ideas to other students and develop concepts in groups. A number of modules incorporate court/tribunal visits, video presentations, and visiting speakers.

Some assessments count towards your degree. There are also ongoing assessments to gather feedback and build on your learning. Assessment methods include research assignments, case studies, problem questions, practical activities, reports, and exams.

UK£5,760

Undergraduate fees are set according to rules from Government in line with forecast inflation. If you're a Home fee-paying student, the fee for your first year of study for 2026/27 will be £9,790. You'll pay tuition fees for every year of study. Fees may increase every year based on the Retail Price Index.

Full-time UK/Irish/EU settled/EU pre-settled students may be eligible for financial support. This would cover your fees for the full four years. UK and EU settled students may also be eligible to receive a maintenance loan.
