Faye Dixon

Stockton, UK

BA (Hons) Fashion Journalism

Faye Dixon knew Sunderland was the place for her after seeing the facilities for journalism at an Open Day. She enjoyed the combination of key journalism tools and creative modules and managed to bag at job at the Sunderland Echo before she’d even graduated. Faye is currently working in a lifestyle journalism role at Living North, making creative content for print and online.

I made the decision to study at the University of Sunderland immediately after visiting an Open Day; after stepping foot in the mediaHUB and seeing what was on offer for journalism, I was hooked. I couldn’t wait to combine my love for fashion and writing with the only course in the region that would truly allow me to do that and the fact it was accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) was obviously appealing too.

Fashion Journalism gives you the freedom to be as creative as you like with your journalistic skills, while also providing everything you need to be a journalist in the real world. The combination of media law, ethics and shorthand is key, while the online and creative modules that are ever-changing and expanding make it, in my opinion, one of the best courses at the University. I’d advise future students to say yes to everything and get stuck in with as much as possible, to make the most of your time there. Three years flies by!

I bagged a job at the Sunderland Echo before I graduated and took a day off to step out in my gown at the Stadium of Light. I got that job thanks to my multimedia CV and the amount of modules, knowledge and creative content on there. Only seven months later, I started a lifestyle journalism role at Living North and now I’m making more creative content for print and online.

Sunderland was a whirlwind of fun and creativity for me, I’d absolutely recommend it to future students. You won’t regret it.”
