BA (Hons) Fashion Journalism

Samantha Boal feels her experiences of studying BA (Hons) Fashion Journalism at Sunderland have changed her as a person and made her more confident in her role as a journalist. She has undertaken a range of extra-curricular opportunities outside of her studies, including her current role as editor of Fashion North, the University’s style and beauty website.

During my first year at the University of Sunderland, I was a totally different person compared to my third year self. From someone who was shy, quiet and had no confidence in their own ability to write to a high standard, I’ve become someone who is the editor of Fashion North, takes control of meetings, and is comfortable uploading any kind of article to Fashion North. To say I’ve been on a journey is an understatement.

The amount of things I’ve learned during my time studying BA (Hons) Fashion Journalism is quite incredible; I remember being told at an Open Day about all the things I’ll be learning whilst I was here, and I never thought I would actually be able to do every single one of them. With the support of lecturers, student support services and fellow students, I’ve conquered all the difficult tasks I’ve had to face throughout my three years here. From style icons and subcultures, to media law, production journalism, to video journalism, the skills I’ve learned are things that I can really be proud of and I’m excited to show off to future employers.

Not all I’ve experienced on this course has been purely academic, but also creative and exciting. In October 2019, Fashion North teamed up with the Bridges in Sunderland to produce a magazine for their winter lookbook. Me and my fellow students were given different roles on the day – I was given the task of interviewing a local Instagrammer and blogger called Laura Ferry on the day which was a great experience for me.

We’ve also been on trips away; in November 2018, we had a trip to York for a Vivienne Westwood exhibition, and while I was in my first year we went to the Clarins Spa in John Lewis, Newcastle to try and test some of their treatments.

The last three years I’ve spent at the University of Sunderland has been amazing, and I can’t wait to use my Fashion Journalism knowledge in the future.”
