Ayodeji Paul Akinberu

Ondo, Nigeria

BSc (Hons) Nursing (Top-Up)

MSc Nursing

Ayodeji Paul Akinberu was working as a staff nurse at First Cardiology Consultant in Lagos Nigeria when he decided to enrol onto BSc (Hons) Nursing (Top-Up) at the University of Sunderland. Initially nervous about making the leap from his comfort zone, he was reassured by the helpful information he received at a Get Ahead event and knew he was making the right choice for him. Now studying MSc Nursing, he has enjoyed his time at Sunderland.

I used to work at First Cardiology Consultant in Lagos Nigeria as a staff nurse. I decided to come and study BSc (Hons) Nursing (Top-Up) at the University of Sunderland because of the course duration, teaching and learning quality, environment, culture, and accommodation. At first, when I got my offer to come and study BSc (Hons) Nursing (Top-Up), it was difficult for me to decide whether to come or not, because I was uncertain of the challenges I would encounter by leaving my comfort zone and going to a new place I have never visited before. But thanks to the information I received at a Get Ahead event, and the helpful information I found on the University’s website, I was inspired to make the choice to come.

Choosing the University of Sunderland again to study MSc Nursing was not difficult and was based on my experiences with the tranquil environment, accommodation, living expenses, quality of staff (especially the lecturers who are very effective in their roles), and also the readily accessible teaching and learning facilities.

At the University of Sunderland, MSc Nursing is delivered at a high-quality level. The best aspects of the course for me have to do with the teaching and learning process, the calibre of staff, the facilities and the multicultural nature of class members. Staff are always very helpful and efficient and make the course a worthwhile experience. Educators are also very sensitive to learners’ needs; they ensure learning is facilitated through various learning techniques, and feedback has been constructive returned in a timely fashion. The two libraries are well equipped and one can get almost any notable nursing literature easily.

I would recommend the University of Sunderland without a second thought. The city of Sunderland is rich in culture, with tourist attractions such as the beaches at Roker and Seaburn. If you are a sports lover like me, you will be fascinated by the amount of sporting activities you will come across at the university sports centre and also at the Stadium of Light. To top it all off, the locals are very friendly to visitors. You will need to experience it for yourself to know that the University of Sunderland is truly life-changing.

Before obtaining my first degree qualification at the University of Sunderland, I promised myself that I would be consistently hardworking and persevere because being successful will not only strengthen my career journey to become a nursing lecturer, but will also make my family proud and motivate others with similar aspirations.
My experience at the University of Sunderland has been splendid from my first day on campus. The journey remains promising and interesting, and the quality and wealth of knowledge and skills I have accumulated are unbelievable. I now feel more confident about my aspirations.”
