I chose to study the MPharm course at the University of Sunderland because it is a well-established university for Pharmacy, with long-standing excellent results. It is an excellent provider of both undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy training – the information and teaching provided enables you to work to an exceptional level in your role as a pharmacist.

After I completed the MPharm course I completed my pre-registration year in a community pharmacy. During my pharmacy career so far I have experienced many areas of the pharmacy profession and have always worked a dual role in my working week. I began working as a relief pharmacy manager in community pharmacy and working as a hospital pharmacist in a private hospital. I then managed a busy community pharmacy, became an area lead and led on both the undergraduate recruitment for the business and on research for the company. Whilst in this position I received a research grant from the NPA to gather information on the changing primary care workforce of pharmacists and also became an academic tutor at the University of Sunderland. I then spent a short period of my career working as a CCG medicines optimisation pharmacist before I decided to move into general practice in 2018, when the NHS England pilot ‘GP Clinical Pharmacist’s’ second phase commenced. I am currently working in this role while continuing my academic tutor role at the University and am also now an independent prescriber.

I hope to continue my career in general practice and academia, promoting the role of a pharmacist in primary care. I would like to develop and move into a senior role with training responsibilities."
