BA (Hons) Childhood Studies

PGCE Primary Education

Anna Millward wanted to fulfil her childhood ambition of being a nursery or primary school teacher and chose Sunderland due to the friendly welcome she received at an Open Day. She is currently studying on the PGCE Primary Education course after obtaining her degree in BA (Hons) Childhood Studies.

I wanted to come to university to fulfil my childhood ambition of being a nursery or primary school teacher. Sunderland was my first choice – I had attended various open days in the North East and Sunderland had a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

The Childhood Studies lectures, which were delivered by experts in the field, gave valuable and detailed insights into current and previous critical situations, while the practical side of the course allowed me to gain experience directly with children through a variety of placements. I found these particularly important and useful for applying the theories I had learned to a real-life setting.

After I graduated, I applied for and progressed onto the PGCE Primary Education course. I was happy and ready to continue, knowing that I would receive support and guidance from the teaching staff. I would definitely recommend the BA (Hons) Childhood Studies course to anyone whose ambition is to work with children but wants to keep their options open. It provides so many opportunities for knowledge development in different professional directions and has definitely been influential for me in reaching my future goals.”
