Case Study

Megan Birbeck

County Durham, UK

BA (Hons) Childhood Studies

MA Social Work

Megan Birbeck decided to study at the University of Sunderland after hearing positive reviews and being interested in both the undergraduate Childhood Studies and Primary Education courses. She chose BA (Hons) Childhood Studies which led her to work for Durham County Council after graduation and she is currently studying for the MA Social Work.

I decided to study at the University of Sunderland after hearing so many positive opinions about it. Plus, I didn’t know whether I wanted to study BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS or BA (Hons) Childhood Studies, and Sunderland offered me the opportunity to apply for both.

I ended up on the Childhood Studies course. The lectures and seminars were so enjoyable and always made effective links to practice, which made them even more interesting. But the best part of the course was the staff, 100%. If I ever had any problems while studying, I could speak to any of the lecturers, but I felt most comfortable talking to my personal tutor and dissertation supervisor. Whether it was study related or on a personal basis, I felt very well supported throughout my time at university.

Another part of the course I loved was the placement, as it enabled me to link a lot of what I had learned on the course with practice, incorporating different theories within the work setting. I also liked the fact that we could choose between three different strand modules in the final year of the course, as this enabled us to choose a pathway better suited to us and our future. After graduation, I got a job working for Durham County Council on their Supervised Contact Service, and I feel it was this job role that gave me the motivation to apply for the MA Social Work.

If I was to give one piece of advice to prospective students it would be to READ! Read, read, read – it benefits you, your learning, your assignments and your results. I would absolutely recommend the University of Sunderland – here I am back again studying for my MA, a decision I am thrilled about.

My time at Sunderland has been brilliant; I have had great learning opportunities and met some fantastic students and staff. Working hard is enjoyable if you are passionate about what you are doing and in doing this you will reap the rewards.”
