Having previously attained two degree level qualifications – a BSc (Hons) Social Sciences and Psychology plus an FdA in Counselling – I decided I wanted to continue my learning even further at master's level. I was studying for a master's at a different university, but I wasn’t having the best experience and decided to withdraw.
I already knew the Programme Leader of the MSc Inequality and Society course at Sunderland and had heard great things about it, so I contacted him to see if there was a possibility of transferring. He was so enthusiastic and helpful that I made the decision to transfer. The fact that it’s a taught master's with really supportive staff, as well as Sunderland being my hometown, I’ve not regretted it at all! I’ve also received fantastic assistance from the Disability Support team who have been excellent.
There are so many great aspects of the course itself – the content is very relevant and current, and you can tell it has been well thought through. The cohort of students I’m studying with is extremely welcoming and the aid I’ve received from the University is second to none. I’ve loved challenging myself and I’ve been able to do so from within a very safe and productive environment.
If you’re thinking of coming to the University of Sunderland, I would recommend it with no hesitation. The structure, support and friendly culture are far better than any other university I’ve studied at. My advice to any prospective students would be to get engaged, be proactive, connect and commit.
I currently work as a counsellor which I’m likely to continue once I’ve obtained my MSc, however I’m very keen to undertake a PhD at some point in the future too.
If I could sum up my experience of studying here at the University of Sunderland, it would be – fun! I’m enjoying the work, feeling challenged and I’m constantly supported by my fellow students and tutors. What’s not to love?”
