MA Childhood and Youth Studies

Having developed a passion for working with young people alongside his full-time job in banking, Sunday Ojo decided to pursue his interests further by studying for our MA Childhood and Youth Studies degree at the University of Sunderland.

Although I’ve been in the banking industry for over a decade, working with children and young people alongside this is where I realised my true passion. I’m currently the Director of Operations of the Okonofua Foundation, a charity which involves organising activities for young people, assisting in the homes of children and awarding scholarships.

I decided to pursue a master's degree as I wanted to gain more knowledge in this field, and having researched the University of Sunderland online, I instantly fell in love with what they had to offer. As well as having fantastic facilities on campus, the course provides three different pathways to choose from, and the admissions process was seamless from start to finish.

I’m really enjoying the course so far and my lecturers have been great, helping me and the other international students to really settle in. The teaching methods are excellent, and the classes are interactive, making them more enjoyable as it gives us all the opportunity to engage in a discussion with each other on various topics.

I’m currently working at a residential centre for young people, which has allowed me to put the skills I’ve learned from the leadership module into practice. In the future, I hope to continue following my passion within the childhood and youth sector and I’d love to revive my blog to try and reach out to even more young people via social media.

I would strongly recommend the University of Sunderland to anyone who is thinking of coming to study here. Everything from the teaching methods to the library facilities to the environment within the classroom is brilliant. Not only that, but the city of Sunderland itself is a wonderful place to live, and affordable too. I have enjoyed every minute of my studying.”
