Victoria Edmundson-Brown

MA Education

After making the move from mental health nursing in the NHS to lecturing at the University of Sunderland, Victoria Edmundson-Brown decided to study for the MA Education degree to develop her skills as a Higher Education academic. The deeper understanding she’s gained from her postgraduate study has led to her achieving a promotion to senior lecturer, and she credits the course content and staff on the course in helping her get there.

Prior to joining the University of Sunderland as a lecturer in 2020, I worked for the NHS for several years as a registered mental health nurse. I’d previously completed nursing mentorship education, and following my transition from professional to academic practice, I was keen to elevate my competence as a Higher Education lecturer. Studying for the MA Education at Sunderland has supported and facilitated me in this endeavour.

The course content has enabled me to acquire a deeper understanding of pedagogical constructs and the tutors have helped me gain new insights and a further nuanced understanding of education in practice, making links between theory and my own practice. This has led to a significant improvement in my own work, from lesson planning to delivery of complex concepts, and assignment support and marking.

One of the things I’ve really appreciated is the tutor accessibility, both in and outside of the classroom. The lecturers are approachable and very responsive to questions. Having only studied at Level 6 prior to the master’s in education, I accessed support from library services and study skills. I found this really beneficial as it supported me to develop my writing and research skills.

Since starting the course, I’ve secured a promotion to senior lecturer. The degree has enhanced my confidence and competence and I feel able to engage in meaningful academic discourse with my peers, which has been a real boost. One of my favourite components of the course was learning about critical thinking within the context of education. However, the factor that has had the most impact on my practice was learning from how the tutors model their teaching.

I’d recommend the MA Education course as it’s supported me in my personal and professional development through high standard teaching, content materials, and both academic and pastoral support. In a word, I’ve found this course transformational!”
