Jessica Lydon has always loved learning and wanted to be a teacher from a very young age. However, she did not know whether to be a primary or secondary education teacher and that's why she chose to study BA (Hons) Education Studies at the University of Sunderland.

As a local, the University of Sunderland was ideal for me as I knew the city and about the amazing reputation Sunderland has for its Education courses. I have always loved learning and university was the dream for me as I knew I wanted to be a teacher from a very young age. However, as I did not know whether I wanted to be a primary or secondary school teacher, I chose to study Education Studies first.

I have loved every second of my time here at Sunderland, my course has introduced me to a whole new way of thinking and I feel so prepared for my future as an educator. Philosophy of Education is embedded throughout the course and has been such an interesting topic which has opened my eyes to a whole new way of teaching and learning. There is also a module on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, which has taught me a vast amount about the needs of children who could potentially be in my class. 

I was diagnosed with dyslexia during my second year, but with help from the University it has not stopped me from achieving good grades. There is so much support available, from study skills to disability support, to help you achieve your full potential.

I would highly recommend the University of Sunderland to other students. The libraries are modern and stocked with a range of books. I would advise students to do their research on about the course they want to do. Come to the open days and speak to current students about their experiences!

After graduation I will be starting a School Direct Initial Teacher Training Course, which will give me Qualified Teacher Status after a year of training. I have grown as a person whilst studying here and it has prepared me for my future career as a Primary School Teacher."
