I was studying for my A Levels at sixth form when I decided that pursuing a university degree would be the best way to ignite a passion and build up to a career in teaching. The University of Sunderland appealed to me due to the brilliant reputation of its Teacher Training and Education courses, and after attending both summer school and some open days, this confirmed I’d made the right decision to study here. The University has such a great sense of community and I felt at home straightaway!
There is so much I love about the Primary Education course – I’m spoilt for choice! The highlight has to be learning from some of the best in the field during placement. It’s refreshing to be able to develop my skills as a teacher, not only in lectures and seminars, but in a hands-on environment. I’ve also really enjoyed having the opportunity to hone my creative writing skills, leading up to writing a Negotiated Curriculum Study in my final year. I had the pleasure of writing about a topic very close to my heart, an LGBTQ+ inclusive RSE curriculum, all the while receiving fantastic support from academic staff.
Once I’ve graduated, I’m hoping to enter the teaching world and secure my first job as a primary school teacher. Although, my degree has taught me that you never know what’s around the corner, so who knows what Mr. Chung will go on to do?
If you’re looking for high quality teaching, a diverse wealth of opportunity and an overall amazing experience, the University of Sunderland is the place for you. Make sure to take advantage of the many sports teams and societies offered here too, as you might just make some friends for life – I know I have! My university journey has been a roller coaster of emotions, but I’ve come out of it having learned so much about myself.”
