Case Study

Being brought up in a nearby town, Sunderland has always been a central part of my life. However, to me it wasn’t just about being close. The University became my first choice for a number of reasons, the most primary being the atmosphere. I attended two events before officially enrolling: an Open Day and a 4-day Summer School, both of which were absolutely amazing. The buildings were modern and the staff were knowledgeable, considerate and interested in my story. From the first moment I stepped onto campus, I knew that this wasn’t just a place to learn, it was also a place I could call home. 

Studying sociology at secondary school really got me interested in the subject. It was a lot of work and while things didn’t always go to plan, the knowledge I learned there benefitted me enormously going into my first year of university.  

The course is constructed to a very high standard and when looking at it, you can tell it has been forged through a lot of hard-work and dedication to both the subject and the students. Sociology at Sunderland is a holistic and creative approach to teaching and learning and offers more than just knowledge. It offers a safe place for students to explore their interests, understand their path in life and pursue an abundance of opportunities which are advantageous to their careers and wellbeing.

I would absolutely recommend the University of Sunderland to others and it’s a university not to be overlooked. The knowledge, confidence and passion I have found here will be with me forever. I have loved my experience here so much that I am continuing to study here for my postgraduate degree – the MSc Inequality and Society. From there, I want to progress to a teaching qualification that would enable me to teach at a Higher Education level. I am incredibly passionate about sociology and would like to aid and support future generations in this subject area."
