BA (Hons) Business and Human Resource Management

Lauren Scott chose to study at the University of Sunderland because of the excellent facilities and reputation of the Business School. She has worked as a recruitment specialist at Caterpillar since graduating and without her placement year provided by the University, this may not have been possible for Lauren.

I chose to study at the University of Sunderland because of their excellent Business School and outstanding facilities. Their fantastic results particularly stood out for me and I also liked the fact that you could study ‘Business Management’ in your first year, and then transition into studying a particular subject area during both second and third years.

Before University, I was studying A-Levels in Sixth Form and was particularly enjoying Business. This was my highest A-Level result and I had a great interest to delve into all aspects of business and study it at higher education.

I’d say the best aspect of the course is the opportunity to complete a 48-week paid Industrial Placement. I secured the role of HR Assistant at Caterpillar, Articulated Trucks in Peterlee, and this experience was invaluable. I was able to transition my Business and HR knowledge learnt in my studies into a global and outstanding workplace environment, working alongside HR professionals and being given endless opportunities, exposed to all aspects of HR.

I learnt more than I could ever have imagined during the placement year and it potentially set me up for the rest of my career. Another great aspect of the course was definitely the teachers in the Business School. They care about you as an individual and only want you to succeed, providing all the help they can along the way. I transitioned over to Business and Human Resource Management because of my love of HR and I found it so interesting, with varied assignment techniques which made it more engaging and helpful.

I would definitely recommend the University of Sunderland to other students, it is a fantastic university which is becoming increasingly popular due to the outstanding teachers, endless opportunities and new facilities. The University also organise several careers events throughout the academic year, in order to connect undergraduate and postgraduate students to potential employers.

Before deciding to go to University, make sure that you have chosen the correct subject and research the different courses which Sunderland has to offer. I’d also say to get involved as much as you can and to take any opportunity given to you. The teachers and support staff have so much experience and knowledge so use them as much as you can.

I’d also say to join a team or society to make the most of your university experience – I played for the University’s Netball 1st Team during my time at Sunderland, which allowed me to meet some amazing friends for life and take a break during my studies.

I am pleased to say that I was offered and accepted a graduate role as ‘Recruitment Specialist’ back at Caterpillar. Without my placement year provided by the University of Sunderland, this may have not been possible and hopefully, I'll have a very long and successful future here.

My time at University was something I’ll never forget. A once in a lifetime experience where I made friends for life and started my career by securing a graduate role, all whilst continuously learning and studying a subject which I am so passionate about."
