Case Study

Ellie McKenna

Living in Sunderland and with a love for the beach, Penshaw Monument, and Herrington Country Park meant there was only one university on the mind of Ellie McKenna. Studying BA (Hons) Business and Human Resource Mangement in Sunderland paid off for Ellie who was a university course representative throughout her second year and is keen to embark on her final year once she completes her year-long placement at Caterpillar.

Besides the fact that the Business School obtained great results which stood out for me, I also received great feedback from other individuals who had studied the same course. These personal recommendations helped influence my decision to join the University of Sunderland.

I have already developed excellent skills and knowledge in a variety of business areas ranging from operations, marketing, accounting and finance and human resources. The personal development, the learning journey and the opportunities provided are all fantastic here.

I would definitely recommend the University of Sunderland. The lecturers are helpful and approachable. The University has a great selection of clubs and societies and a fantastic variety of facilities such as a gym at CitySpace and library at each campus. The University frequently organises employability events and careers fares which are used to connect undergraduates as well as postgraduates with voluntary and paid opportunities. Overall I have found my experience fantastic so far.

My advice for future students would be to ensure that you have chosen the correct subject to study before you apply as you will spend the next few years of your life studying and then many more years working in that sector. Therefore, it is key to fully research the course and the course content before you apply.

Take a proactive role in your learning and keep track of your deadlines. Make the most of your time at the University and take advantage of the support and guidance from lectures, tutors, mentors and the Sunderland futures department.

I’d strongly recommend embarking on securing a placement opportunity to gain beneficial experience within your chosen sector. The university allows you to prepare for your future so make sure that you get the most out of it.

I have developed as a person since attending the University of Sunderland, and I genuinely do learn something new every single day. I have truly enhanced my knowledge since enrolling at the University, three years ago. The University offers its utmost support and provides everyone with amazing opportunities, from CIPD events, to guest speakers, and university onsite services support to enhance your CV and interview skills. I aim to graduate with a first-class degree and intend on securing a job within the HR sector."
