The course aims to build on the existing skills and knowledge of CCOT (Critical Care Outreach Team) registered practitioners by providing scaffolding around the National Critical Care Outreach Competency – Enhanced Level.
This module will provide a more flexible, blended approach and offer students the opportunity to develop their enhanced consultation and diagnostic reasoning skills by engaging in a system-by-system approach to managing a deteriorating patient through online lectures and material alongside consolidation classroom days, encompassing clinical simulation and debrief.
This course is designed for registered practitioners who manage patients requiring critical care input in a range of clinical environments and who do not currently hold the CCORC course or equivalent. This includes Critical Care Outreach Practitioners or their equivalent and senior nurses working in Critical Care who can rotate into a Critical Care Outreach Team to fulfil the relevant competencies.
This course will run every Wednesday online from 9-3 pm unless stated. The on-campus dates are:
The course will run over 6 months. The course is taught using a blended approach allowing for a more student-focused, flexible learning environment, and will incorporate both synchronous and asynchronous study. The two simulation/consolidation (on-campus days) will encompass simulation, problem-based learning (PBL), active seminars and debrief. The VLE platform (Canvas) will be the focus of self-directed learning. All sessions will be taught by faculty members and other subject matter experts (SMEs).
Authentic assessment will be at the forefront and will include a critical case review and ‘Grand Round’ (Case-based presentation). Formative assessment, assessment literacy, and feedback will be embedded throughout the course.
The student will be expected to embrace experiential learning in the workplace and are required to complete the CC3N Enhanced Critical Care Outreach Competencies.
